There is currently a major donor milk shortage. 80 million ounces a year are needed to feed all the neonatal babies in the United States, but only about 15 million ounces are used. Donor banks and NICUs do not have visibility into supply and demand across the donor milk ecosystem or a way to easily ensure that all quality controls are being met across donor banks. At a global scale, donor milk fraud and lack of traceability are known issues – human milk can sell from anywhere between $4 and $16 an ounce.
This is just one example of a serious challenges facing the healthcare industry. Could blockchain be the answer?
This discussion will take a look at strides made to implement blockchain as a viable solution to solving some of the most interesting and challenges issues in healthcare like bringing traceability and transparency to donor breast milk. The panelists have been involved in Hyperledger’s Healthcare Working Group over the last year and can shed light on different initiatives, projects and pilots that involve Hyperledger and other blockchain technologies in the healthcare space from various perspectives.
