Hyperledger Project, the developer of an open standard for distributed ledgers that’s backed by the likes of IBM and J.P. Morgan, has signed up American Express as a Premier member. Sastry Durvasula, Senior Vice President of Technology, responsible for leading enterprise-wide Big Data, blockchain, digital payments and partnerships, will represent the company on the initiative’s Governing Board.

Large global services company to support fastest growing open blockchain technology initiative

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – (January 30, 2017) – Hyperledger Project, a collaborative cross-industry effort created to advance blockchain technology, announced today American Express has joined the project as a Premier Member. As a Premier member, American Express will contribute to the development of the project’s mission to create an enterprise-grade, open source, distributed ledger technology. Sastry Durvasula, Senior Vice President of Technology, responsible for leading enterprise-wide big data, blockchain, digital payments and partnerships, will represent the company on the Hyperledger Governing Board.

(1.26.17) Finextra: Blockchain: accelerated activity in trade finance

Last year August I wrote a blog on blockchain and trade finance. There I described the various pilots and plans for using this technology in the trade space. In that month, the bank-backed R3CEV blockchain consortium revealed that 15 of its member banks had participated in a trial involving trade finance. Since then activity in this area has accelerated. It signals that enterprise banks are increasingly interested in the application of the blockchain to trade finance. The idea is that a distributed database like a blockchain can form the basis for a wholly digitized supply chain.

(1.24.17) CoinDesk: Deutsche Börse Unveils Bank Transfer Blockchain Project

Market operator Deutsche Börse has unveiled a new blockchain proof-of-concept focused on commercial bank cash transfers.

Dubbed ‘CollCo’ (for ‘collateralized coin’), the project is designed to work in conjunction with Eurex Clearing, the clearing house utilized by Deutsche Börse. Using the Hyperledger Fabric project’s code as a basis, the firm is seeking patent approval for its transfer solution, it announced today.

By now, most of the largest banks and some notable tech giants are participating in industry-wide blockchain standard-setting activities, partnering with startups and taking different approaches to determining which use cases would improve upon existing technology.
